The Racine Chapter, NSDAR, serves all communities throughout Racine County, Wisconsin
The Racine area was first explored by the French in 1699. The earliest name for Racine was an American Indian version of Root River, “Chippecotton”. However, it wasn’t until 1834 that Captain Gilbert Knapp arrived at the mouth of the Root River, built a hut, and established the first settlement in Racine County. He called it “Port Gilbert”.
Although Racine was not yet settled during the American Revolutionary War, there are several American Revolutionary War veterans buried in cemeteries throughout Racine County. Our chapter was founded in February 1899 by Marietta Teal Olin, just 9 years after the national organization began. Our current chapter members are descended from veterans from ten of the thirteen original colonies. Check the “Our Patriots” page. Like our sister chapters, our goal is to promote education, historic preservation, and patriotism. We support veterans in and around our community as well as National Society's veteran projects.
Nationwide DAR members, like those in our chapter volunteer millions of service hours each year in their local communities, including supporting active-duty military personnel and assisting veteran patients, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid each year to students and supporting schools for under-served children with yearly donations of more than one million dollars.
Recent activities include:
Supporting the local veteran's home through several volunteer initiatives
Supporting active-duty military personnel with “goodie boxes”
Supporting local and DAR-supported schools with donations and classroom opportunities
Promoting patriotism through participation in local events
Promoting the education of our membership through nationally provided programs and book clubs
Preserving history through the support of DAR-owned historical sites
Encouraging social engagement among members and building relationships
